Welcome to Author Kristin Halbrook

When I was little, I wanted to be a writer, the President of the USA or the first female NFL quarterback. Despite being able to throw a wicked spiral, I didn’t really grow to the size needed for the NFL. Then, as I got older and studied more, I came to realize there were better ways to effect positive change than becoming president. The first one, however, stuck. Even when I was pursuing other dreams, I always took time to write here and there. NOBODY BUT US will be published by HarperChildren’s in 2013.

When I’m not writing or reading (which is what I do all day, in all of my work), I’m spending time with pixies, my Mad Scot soulmate, and one grumpy cocker spaniel; traveling across oceans and time; cooking and baking up a storm and watching sunsets and waves crash on the beach. I currently live, love and explore in The Emerald City, though I occasionally make wispy, dream-like plans to move to New York, Paris or a Scottish castle one day (if just temporarily).

What’s the best advice anyone has ever given you??
Your life isn’t over, it’s just moving in a new direction. Go with it.

If you were a super hero what would your kryptonite be??
Orchards

You have won one million dollars what is the first thing that you would buy??
A house. I’m rather house proud and it bugs me that I don’t own my home right now.

If someone wrote a book about your life, what would the title be??
“And Then She Said, Screw It, I’m Doing What Makes Me Happy, Expectations Be Damned.”

How long do you generally let a story idea ‘marinate’ in your brain before you start the book??
It depends on what else I have going on. When i’m in the middle of several projects, ideas get a lot of time to marinate because I simply can’t attend to them at that moment. Other times, I start writing immediately and the idea develops as I go along.
How did you go about publishing your book??
I wrote a book, I revised it, I had beta readers tear it apart, I revised it again, I queried it, I waited, I got an offer, I signed with an agent, I kept writing, my book sold. The slush pile does, indeed, work.
If you were sick/stuck in bed, what comfort food would you want and what author would you want to read?
I would want fresh squeezed orange juice and I would read all the books that make me cry, starting with HOW I LIVE NOW and JELLICOE ROAD.

If you were President for a day,what is the first thing you would do??
Close tax loopholes, raise taxes on certain income groups and businesses, cut the military budget and restore basic social safety nets, including funding for education, food and elderly care.

If you weren’t a human, what would you be??
Either a red panda or a sea otter. Possibly a cherry tree.

Do you like the spotlight or lurking in the shadows??
I wouldn’t call myself a lurker–how creepy!–but I am a rather private person. It takes too much makeup to be in the spotlight all the time, and I’ve got books to write.

What’s your favorite word??
Facetious. Also, gnaw.
How many books are in your TRB pile??
So many that they’ve overflowed my bedroom and now reside in my office area. At least a hundred. More or less.

What is next on your to read list??
THE 5TH WAVE *iz excited*

What one item would you eat for the rest of your life??
I guess I would get sick on any one thing, but I am so fond of good bread with butter. And perfect Washington cherries.

What is the last thing you bought??
A hot chocolate and car repairs.
Favorite restaurant??
The Walrus and Carpenter in Seattle.
How do you feel about banned books? Do you have a favorite??
I think it’s a joke to ban books, but I’m glad they’re getting the attention! For classic works, Kate Chopin’s THE AWAKENING is amazing. For YA, GO ASK ALICE, THE GIVER and all of Judy Blume’s and Ellen Hopkins’ books should be read, despite censors.

If you were not a writer, what would you like to do??
Grow fruit. Own a bakery.

Do your characters really talk to you??
Are people in lab coats going to show up and take me away if I say yes?

Are you for or against books being made into movies??
For. I’m fascinated by the way the film industry applies their own vision to a book. Even when it’s terrible. Which happens . . . kind of a lot.

Maybe I’m too late. Maybe Zoe’s dad stole all her fifteen years and taught her to be scared. I’ll undo it. Help her learn to be strong again, and brave. Not that I’m any kind of example, but we can learn together.

When the whole world is after you, sometimes it seems like you can’t run fast enough.

Maybe it’ll take Will years to come to terms with being abandoned. Maybe it’ll take forever. I’ll stay with him no matter how long it takes to prove that people don’t always leave, don’t always give up on you.
