In this very personal autobiography, Hillery weaves humor and her heart to tell of her experience in raising two boys who she fostered, then adopted. It’s nothing short of a miracle that she was able to manage to do this on her own, but as she asserts, there were some people along the way that helped lighten her load and be the “village” to help raise the boys. It also speaks to the injustices that regularly take place in the foster system and the adoption support that is needed, particularly with the struggles that can take place with kids who have attachment issues or when being born drug-impacted impacts their growth and development. This is a great read for anyone who needs encouragement with fostering and adopting children. It’s also quite inspiring, even if that isn’t your walk in life, to see a woman have such a commitment and sacrifice to raising these boys, even when the rewards aren’t outweighing the costs.

Hillery St. George is a pseudonym used to protect the guilty. She is the proud mother of six children and a grammy to five grandchildren. She considers her greatest accomplishment to be raising a family. Hillery is an adjunct professor of Early Childhood Education, a Mental Health Counselor in private practice, and a Life Coach. She would like to thank the band of caring people who helped take the desperate out of the lullaby.

1. ?Describe your book in 5 words:
heartwarming, inspirational, thought-provoking, humorous, and frustrating
2. ?What drew you to writing this genre??
This is a true biographical story of the adoption of my youngest litter of sons. ?I was telling the story to a friend on a long drive. ?He woke up in the middle of the night and wrote a letter saying: ?“You have to tell this story. ?It will help many people, inspire people, and change lives. ?I started writing soon after. ?Desperate Lullaby took 5 years to complete.
3. ?Top three things on my bucket list: ?
A very long visit to Italy, a mission to the Rome Italy temple and a movie made of Desperate Lullaby.
4. ?What is your favorite way to spend a rainy day?
Snuggling up with a great read!
5. ?If you were not a writer, what would you like to do??
I don’t consider myself a writer. ?I had a story that I thought needed to be told, so I told it. ?I have written newspaper articles for a Family Forum column, but they were short and sweet. ?I didn’t think I had the attention span to actually write a book, but I just kept at it until the story was told. ?In my real life I am a mental health counselor, adjunct professor in early childhood education and a life coach.
6. ?Will you be attempting to write any more books??
Yes, for years I have thought about writing a book about my experience as a social worker and counselor. ?I have some amazing stories to tell. ?I’ve thought of entitling it:?A Circle in a Spiral.
7. ?What was your most embarrassing experience??
I described it in?Desperate Lullaby.? I was a beginning social worker trying to learn the legal paper work. ?I yelled from my office to Ron in the intake office which had an open door to the waiting room: ?“Hey Ron, what’s the difference between a summons and a subpoena (only I left off the?sub?and added an?is?on the end of the word)” He yelled back, “If you don’t know by now, I’m not going to tell you.” ?He then proceeded down the other half of the building to share my blooper. ?Very embarrassing indeed!
8. ?What was your most frightening experience? ?
When working at Utah State Hospital as a psychiatric medication aid on the youth ward, one of our patients came to the office to ask for tylenol, then barged into the med room and grabbed a knife….he held it to my side as we walked down the long hall to unlock the door so he could be free. ?I was pregnant with my first baby at the time. ?There was another student in lock-up watching all of this out of his window. ?Two weeks later, I was left on the floor alone with him. ?I was warned by the hairs on the back of my neck that I was in danger. ?I got my key to the office ready and walked down the long hall. ?He leaned our of the girls shower room and said, “Come here”. ?I told him to come to me if he wanted something and he stepped out with a pipe that he had broken off the wall. ?Because I had my key ready, I got in the office and shoved a couch against the locked door, while he broke out the leaded glass window. ?I called for help and after what seemed like a very long time, they came to the rescue. ?These types of incidents hadn’t happened to anyone before! ?Very, very scary!
9. ?You have just won one million dollars. ?What is the first thing you would buy??
A home and with the change:) a trip to Italy!
10. ?What is the happiest moment of your life so far? ?
The birth of my first baby, Hillery April. ?I was and am in awe at the miracle of life and to be a mother is the greatest experience and opportunity of my life!
