Author Helen Boswell

Helen Boswell is originally from upstate New York. She obtained her Ph.D. in Biological Sciences from the University at Buffalo and currently teaches biology at Southern Utah University. Helen enjoys playing with her two little boys, camping, gardening, eating large bowls of ice cream after the kids go to bed, and hanging out on the couch with her husband to watch Breaking Bad, Louis CK, and Wilfred — and of course, writing. She is the author of the YA urban fantasy MYTHOLOGY. She is also the editor of other novels, including David James’ LIGHT OF THE MOON and THE WITCH’S CURSE.

Interview

If you could travel in a Time Machine would you go back to the past or into the future?
Future. I’m always looking ahead, maybe to a fault.
Tell us your most rewarding experience since being published.
One of my readers sent me a letter and a sketch that she had rendered of two of my characters (Hope and Raleigh). Another reader sent me a charm bracelet she had made with charms for Hope, Micah, and Jonathan. I am still in shock that people are actually reading my debut novel, let alone enjoying it enough to take the time to express their appreciation for my story like this. And it doesn’t have to be material – just a simple passing thanks or tweet can evoke that same feeling of gratitude.

Is there a song you could list as the theme song for your book or any of your characters?
Demons, by Imagine Dragons. I hadn’t heard this song until after I wrote MYTHOLOGY, but the lyrics fit Micah almost perfectly:
“When you feel my heat
Look into my eyes
It’s where my demons hide
Don’t get too close
It’s dark inside”
Can you see yourself in any of your characters?
People sometimes ask me if I intended Gail Salazar to be me because we both teach biology for our “day jobs.” But I hadn’t intended that — I can see myself more in Robin, loyal to her friends and always doing her best to be diplomatic.
Hidden talent?
I can play the didgeridoo. ??

Which authors have influenced you most how?
Christopher Farnsworth, author of the Blood Oath/President’s Vampire series, was an amazing influence during the writing process. He gave me incredible feedback and provided some editorial suggestions that helped make MYTHOLOGY what it is today. And Kendare Blake, author of the Anna Dressed in Blood series, was influential just in terms of her writing and being able to bring characters and their voices to life.
Do you prefer to write in silence or with music?
I prefer to write with music and headphones. My current playlist includes songs from DeVotchka, Muse, Arcade Fire, The Killers, and Snow Patrol.?

You have won one million dollars. What is the first thing that you would buy?
A house with my own room dedicated to a library and where I could escape to write. And a house-elf that would help me do the laundry and cleaning.?

What was your favorite children’s book?
Anything by Roald Dahl. I loved Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG — he had such an amazing imagination. I would read these stories over and over again. I recently bought copies of my favorite Dahl books to share with my own kids.?

If you were a bird, which one would you be?
Do fictional birds count? I would be a phoenix so I could rise from the ashes and fly in the sun again. Life is too short to do everything I want to accomplish — it would be nice if I could rise from the ashes even just once. ??

Do you write as you go or do you have the book all planned out from page 1?
I have most of the plot essentials planned out, but I am a pantser — I write by the seat of my pants, mostly. I get a lot of ideas about subplots as I write and as the characters come to life by themselves. Sometimes I’ll go back in and layer things in, other times I may shuffle around scenes or add/remove little bits. I’m just glad that I’m not writing in times when they only had typewriters. Or parchment and paper!
If you could be one of the Greek Gods, which would it be and why?
Athena – not because of the war, but because of the wisdom and ability to strategize. Plus, I love owls.
Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’m currently working on the sequel, MYTHOLOGY: THE WICKED, which picks up with Hope in her new life (no spoilers!) and alternates between the POVs of Hope and Micah. I am thinking of writing a contemporary YA after I’m done with the MYTHOLOGY series. We’ll see where I wind up in a year or so.

    This book sounds so good! This is definitely my type of book that I could totally get into. I want this book so much!!! The cover is so pretty and I really like that the author chose to use a drawing of a girl then a real picture taken of someone.     I’m totally in love with your cover, Helen. It’s to die for!
    I’m currently listening to DeVotchka on Youtube… I’d never heard of them so I had to Google them. They’re pretty cool, actually. A little haunting. I love music with that quality.
    I also grew up reading Roald Dahl. My favourites were the BFG,James and the Giant Peach and The Twits!

    I love the word Mythology as well as that which is called mythology. This looks greatly interesting and very nice. The kind of book Id suggest to my little sister after I read it. Maybe it would even catch my brothers attention, that would be great.
