Author Shawn Mihalik

Shawn was born in San Diego, California, in 1990, where he lived until he was seven.

In high school, he won several awards both as a writer for and editor-in-chief of his student newspaper,?The Talon, prompting him to study journalism at Youngstown State University before deciding that his passion for writing was better directed at fiction. He then spent several years in Pittsburgh, learning American Sign Language and working with the deaf and hard of hearing. In 2012, he signed a three-book deal with?Asymmetrical Press.

Shawn currently lives in Youngstown, Ohio, where he writes novels, poetry, and short stories and explores the characteristics of different varieties of wine. His works include?The Final Days of Poetry, a poetry collection;?The Flute Player, a novella; and?Brand-Changing Day, a novel.

Shawn loves to climb things, especially large things like rocks and cliffs and mountains. He also still reads comic books.

Interview

Please tell us in one sentence only, why we should read your book.
You should read my book because you have at some point, I’m willing to bet, stood in that spot that exists right at the cusp between childhood and adulthood, and that’s what this book is about.
Any other books in the works? Goals for future projects?
I’ve got a full-length novel called?Brand-Changing Day, a satire about corporate American chain restaurants, coming out at the end of the summer. I’m also working on a handful of short stories and essays that I’ll be contributing to forthcoming collections.
What inspired you to want to become a writer?
I was fortunate enough to have a handful of great teachers growing up who made me read books that I otherwise wouldn’t have read, and it was reading these books, coupled with the passion my teachers had for them and for reading itself, that made me want to become a writer.
What was your favorite book when you were a child/teen?
Peter Pan?by J.M. Barrie. In fact, it’s still my favorite book and likely always will be, and I think its influence is at least partially evident in?The Flute Player.
If you could live anywhere in the world where would it be?
New York City. Specifically this one residential high-rise designed a few years ago by an architect named Frank Gehry. Every apartment in it has these bay windows that act as a sort of bubble, so when you stand by the window you’re literally surrounded by the New York skyline on multiple sides.
What do you think of book trailers?
I think they’re a great form of marketing, and I’ve seen some excellent ones. But I hate making them.
What’s your favorite word?
Monosyllabically
If you could invite any 5 people to dinner who would you choose?
Jonathan Franzen, Sir Richard Branson, Bill Gates, Neil Gaiman, and Oprah
If you could meet one person who has died who would you choose?
Steve Jobs. I’d like to thank him for creating a company whose products I find invaluable and use every day. I’d also like to see whether he was a jerk, some people say, a great guy, like others say, or both, like the rest say.
What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?
Butter pecan, especially if it’s made with a little real butter.
If you could jump in to a book and live in that world, which would it be?
The Lord of the Rings. I would love to live in Middle-earth, ride on the back of a giant Eagle, maybe eat lunch with a Hobbit.
What’s one piece of advice you would give aspiring authors?
Write something, now. We can sit and aspire all we want, but it’s only after taking action that we’ve stepped onto the path that leads to where or what we want to be.
