Autumn at Jasper Lake?by Carol Ross

War veteran Ryder Shelton has moved to remote Jasper Lake to escape the guilt and pain that has taken over his life. He’s convinced the only way he can do that is to retreat from the world. That includes staying away from his captivating neighbor Jessie Madigan. But Jessie has a troubled foster dog that needs Ryder’s help. Somehow he has to keep his distance from one while he spends time with the other.

A Girl and Her Dog (The Making of Autumn at Jasper Lake) by Carol Ross

Autumn at Jasper Lake didn’t turn out to be the story I thought it would be. I’m not much of a plotter and I’d never written a romance of this length. All I knew when I sat down to write a short story tied to my Seasons of Alaska series was that Rankins would be the setting. I thought the story would be something light-hearted and not-too-serious with a hero returning or moving to Rankins to escape a difficult past. He’d want to be left alone. I intended for the folks of Rankins to make my broody hero’s alone-time impossible. And for those of you who’ve read about Rankins, you can imagine all the possibilities there.

Some of that happens. But, as is usually the case when I start writing, my characters began to take on lives of their own. And they had other plans. Plans that surprised me.

Special Forces Veteran, Ryder Shelton, has been through too much and seen so much that he is checking out of society. There’s a future for him, but not until he somehow deals with the guilt and pain that is crippling him.

Dog rescuer/trainer Jessie Madigan doesn’t quite have the weight on her shoulders that Ryder does. But she did in the past. Who better to help Ryder deal with his issues than someone who has wrestled with his kind of pain and guilt herself? But life isn’t quite that easy, is it? You can’t just magically wish someone else’s pain away. I knew it would take something special to touch, and begin to heal, the depth of Ryder’s pain.

Like many of you, I’m an animal lover. I have a wiener dog named Lucky. He was literally a rescued dog who nearly froze to death before he graciously agreed to come and live with us. (Okay, okay, there may have been a “little” snapping and growling during the rescue.) He’s bad-mannered, entitled, extraordinarily spoiled, and suffers a multitude of issues due to his past, including separation anxiety.? He’s also the light of my life. When I’m at my lowest and would swear that nothing could cheer me, he always somehow manages.? He makes me smile a thousand times a day and in a thousand different ways. Lucky might need me, but I need him right back.

Ryder, it turns out, is a dog lover as well. He inadvertently meets his neighbor Jessie and her foster dog, Fife. He sees immediately that something isn’t quite right with Fife, yet everything about Jessie seems to be the opposite. He knows he can help Fife. He also knows he needs to keep his distance where Jessie is concerned. But how can he help the dog and not be captivated by her owner?

Fife is Jessie’s toughest rescue case to date. She’s tried everything to get through to this dog. So she’s heartened when Fife immediately responds to Ryder. Jessie will do anything to help one of her dogs, even if that means bothering her new neighbor who only wants to be left alone. Even when that neighbor stirs feelings from her past that she’d rather not revisit.
